As we close the first week of the 31 Days of Somatic Reflections series, I’m reflecting on the power of awareness of the body as a foundation for change, self-awareness, and growth.
This week’s prompts explored:
✨ Day 1: What sensations do you notice in your body right now?
✨ Day 2: Where in your body do you feel calm or ease?
✨ Day 3: Where in your body do you feel tension or discomfort?
✨ Day 4: How does your body feel after taking 3 intentionally slowed breaths?
✨ Day 5: What does my body need more of today?
✨ Day 6: How does it feel in your body when you plant your feet firmly on the ground?
✨ Day 7: How does your posture affect how it feels in your body? When you slouch? When you lengthen your spine?
These practices invite us to tune into the subtleties of the present moment and notice how things shift within us. This practice connects to the idea that awareness creates space for intentional choice and change.
Often, we are so automated in our responses to the subtle, nuanced shifts in our bodies that we might find ourselves avoiding or redirecting from what we are doing based on the sensation—without conscious awareness of the sensation or the avoidance. These automated reactions may be shaped by old cues—physical, emotional, or even habitual—that no longer align with the present moment, holding us in old patterns and missing moments where change was possible.
By slowing down and bringing attention to our body, we can pause this automation, notice the sensations as they arise, and respond with greater intention.
Awareness of the body offers a simple, accessible way to step out of automatic reactions and reconnect with ourselves. Through curiosity and openness, even small shifts—like planting our feet on the ground or lengthening our spine—can change how we feel, influence our thoughts, and create space for deeper connection.
Next week, the reflections will shift from awareness of the body to exploring connection—a natural extension of somatic awareness and growth.
