Coaching as a Road Trip: A Journey of Discovery

Lyanne Westie

Metaphor offers such a supportive way to understand dynamic concepts. In today's blog we will use the metaphor of a road trip to help explain coaching and the support coaching offers.

Imagine you’re preparing for a road trip, perhaps to Alaska. You’ve got an idea of where you want to go, but something’s holding you back—maybe hesitation, fear, or uncertainty about the route. You might feel like you’re not ready, unsure of where to start, or struggling with unseen resistance. This is where coaching steps in. As the client, you’re the driver, fully in control of your journey. But you’ve invited me, your coach, to be your co-pilot for this adventure.

A Co-Pilot, Not a Driver

My role as your coach isn’t to tell you where to go or how to get there. You’re in the driver’s seat the entire time, steering towards your desired destination. As your co-pilot, I ask skilled and supportive questions, listen deeply for your values, beliefs, strengths, and doubts, and help you articulate your reasons for the trip. Together, we explore the motivation behind the journey, and any resistances or fears that may be showing up along the way. My role is not to decide the route but to guide you in clarifying your path and making choices that align with your goals.

Checking In Along the Way

Coaching is a collaborative process. Like any good co-pilot, I’ll check in with you regularly to see how we’re doing as a team. Is the way we’re navigating the journey working for you? Maybe you find open-ended questions helpful, or perhaps brainstorming ideas brings clarity. If you feel overwhelmed, we can adjust the pace. This collaboration ensures we’re supporting your vision in a way that feels right for you.

Mid-Journey Changes: Adjusting the Destination

Sometimes, as we journey along the road, you might discover that Alaska isn’t the destination you truly want. The process of exploring your goals can reveal new desires, and suddenly, you might find yourself wanting to head somewhere else. When this happens, we don’t see it as a failure or obstacle—we stay curious. Is this shift a result of resistance, or is it a true alignment with a new awareness? We can revisit your goals and adjust the route, always guided by your evolving vision.

Macro and Micro Goals

Every coaching journey has an overarching goal, like reaching Alaska, but it’s also broken down into smaller, manageable pieces. In each session, we might focus on micro-goals, such as deciding on a departure date or planning the next leg of the journey. While the big-picture destination stays in view, we work step by step, ensuring each session is purposeful and aligned with your broader vision.

A Journey Driven by You

Ultimately, coaching is about your agency, your choices, and your pace. The journey might take unexpected turns, or we might encounter some detours along the way. But no matter what, you’re the one driving. I’m here as a trusted co-pilot, asking the right questions, offering reflections, and supporting you in finding your own way. Together, we’ll explore not just the road ahead, but the deeper motivations, challenges, and desires that shape your unique path.

Whether it’s a literal road trip or a metaphorical adventure toward personal growth, consider the support a coach can offer. Just as a co-pilot assists with navigation, a coach can help you clarify your destination, tackle challenges, and adjust your route as needed. Topics we might explore together could include setting and achieving goals, overcoming self-doubt, developing a strategic plan for personal or professional growth, managing transitions, or enhancing self-awareness, developing a self-care plan, and supporting and cultivating balance. Coaching sessions can start from the very beginning. Each session is a step toward understanding and achieving your unique vision.

This road trip sounds great, but I’m not sure where I want to go. I feel stuck and know I want change, but I’m uncertain about where to start or what to change." Gaining clarity about your needs and direction can be a wonderful destination in itself. Sometimes, your journey might lead you to rediscover and return home to yourself.
